How to use the 5 minute timer

Five minutes is the length of a great many small things: steeping tea, resting between sets, a plank you promised yourself, the break you said you would take. It is also short enough that people usually try to keep track in their head, and long enough that they lose it. This timer counts down in the tab title, so it keeps working while you switch to something else, and it rings when the time is up. If your browser allows it the screen stays awake too, which matters when your hands are busy.

  1. 1Press Start — the countdown begins immediately at five minutes.
  2. 2Switch tabs if you like; the remaining time stays visible in the tab title.
  3. 3A chime plays when it reaches zero, even if this tab is in the background.
  4. 4Press Space to pause and resume, or R to reset.

FAQ

Does it keep running if I change tabs?

Yes. The timer works from a fixed end time rather than counting ticks, so browser throttling in a background tab cannot make it drift. Five minutes is still five minutes.

Will I hear the alarm if my tab is hidden?

Yes, provided you started the timer by pressing the button — that click is what lets the browser play sound later. If you have granted notification permission you also get a system notification.

Can I set a different length?

Yes. Use the quick-set buttons for common lengths, or type any hours, minutes and seconds into the custom fields below the timer.

Does my screen stay on?

Where the browser supports Wake Lock, yes, while the timer is running. That covers most modern browsers on desktop and Android. It is released the moment the timer stops.
