How to use the 20 minute timer

Twenty minutes is not an arbitrary round number — it is the length most sleep research points to for a daytime nap. Sleep deepens in stages, and waking from the deeper stages produces sleep inertia: that heavy, disoriented feeling that can last half an hour and leaves you worse off than before you lay down. Staying under about thirty minutes generally keeps you in the lighter stages, so you wake up alert. Twenty gives you a margin for the few minutes it takes to actually fall asleep. The alarm still fires with the tab in the background, and the screen stays awake if your browser allows it.

  1. 1Press Start before you lie down — the countdown begins at twenty minutes.
  2. 2Put the device somewhere you will hear it, and check the volume first.
  3. 3A chime plays at zero; the tab title also changes so a glance is enough.
  4. 4For a shorter nap use the quick-set buttons, or type a custom length.

FAQ

Why twenty minutes and not thirty?

It usually takes a few minutes to fall asleep, so twenty on the clock is closer to fifteen asleep — comfortably inside the light stages. Thirty on the clock risks waking you out of deeper sleep, which is where the grogginess comes from.

I still feel groggy after twenty minutes.

That points to sleep debt rather than nap length: a very tired person drops into deeper sleep faster. It usually eases after a few minutes of light and movement, and it is a signal to look at your nights rather than your naps.

Will the alarm wake me if the screen locks?

The timer requests a wake lock while running, which keeps most screens on. If the device sleeps anyway, browsers may suspend audio — so on a phone it is safer to keep the screen on and the volume up.

Can I use this as a study timer instead?

Yes, twenty minutes is a reasonable focus block. If you want the work-and-break cycle handled automatically, the Pomodoro timer does that without you restarting anything.
